Sharing insights and knowledge

Principals are the leaders of their school shaping both the curriculum and business direction. It is a challenging role, and it can be a lonely one. CWA New Media acknowledged this when planning and developing the LeadSpace Digital Stories video collection.

The need

LeadSpace is the first stop online environment for all New Zealand principals and boards of trustees. Commissioned by the Ministry of Education to assist in building school leadership capacity, CWA New Media was commissioned to design and develop the environment.

In considering the needs of principals, we knew that providing insights into the practice and thinking of their peers would be a valuable contribution. LeadSpace Digital Stories provides this by presenting an online video series featuring principals from across the country who reflect on their practice and share their thinking with their peers via the web.

The innovation

In producing the videos CWA New Media ensured they reflected the country's diverse learning landscape. Included are stories from rural and urban New Zealand, schools teaching in the Mori medium, and schools with a rich and diverse ethnic student mix.

Our process included researching and meeting optential contributors, and then filming and editing a series of 34 minute video-based interviews in which school leaders talk about their practice and processes. We published the clips online accompanied by transcripts, focus questions and supporting information to encourange audiences to use the videos as a springboard for further discussion.

Another goal of LeadSpace Digital Stories is to enable access and insights for all those with an interest in education so that they can gain a glimpse of the work and aspirations of those leading our schools.
