Māori language resources
Dedicated Māori team delivers essential resources
CWA New Media’s dedicated Māori team delivers quality resources to the Māori education sector. It works alongside Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo Māori - the Māori language Commission and other key Māori education stakeholders.
The need
New Zealand teachers need a rich collection of Māori language resources to assist teaching and learning and support the revitalisation of the Māori language.
The innovation
The growing collection of Māori language resources is hosted by Te Kete Ipurangi (TKI) – the Ministry of Education’s bilingual online learning centre. Here’s a selection:
Exploring Te Ao Kori and Te Ao KoriTe ao kori (the world of movement) is a Māori celebration of life through movement.
CWA New Media designed and developed this online learning environment for the Ministry of Education in 2005. Teacher-centred resources, in te reo Māori (Te Ao Kori) and English (Exploring Te Ao Kori) encapsulate ideas for planning learning experiences, and intended outcomes.
Many of the resources use video and photographs to show games and activities such as whai (string games), ngā mahi poi (poi activities) and tākaro ā-ringa (hand games). They integrate aspects from health and physical education, hauora, the arts, ngā toi and Māori education. They are being developed together as a work in progress and encourage teachers to share information with the TKI Māori Education and Hauora online editors.
Te Ao Kori
Exploring Te Ao Kori
CWA New Media designed and developed the Pūtaiao Online website for teachers and students in 2004/05. It provides cross curricula links and a variety of resources based on tikanga Māori. The site is divided into three whenu (or strands) - Ō Mataora (The Living World), Ō Ahupungao (The Physical World) and Ō Kawekawe (The Material World), each containing ideas for the classroom, teachers’ notes, experiments and worksheets for students, and links to pūtaiao-based interactives. The Maramataka (calendar) section lists science-related events, and links to further information. There is also a section for Whakahiki pukenga (professional development), and a page for Āwhina (assistance).
Te Tau 11 Pūtaiao - NZ Pathfinder seriesLaunched on March 24, 2005, this is an online Māori translation of the science year 11 Pathfinder series, designed to support the learning and revision of scientific concepts, processes and skills for the New Zealand Science Curriculum. The Pathfinder series is a huge resource, and to have it translated into Māori is invaluable.
Ngā Toi (Māori Arts) onlineCWA New Media designed and developed the Ngā Toi Online website for the Ministry of Education to reflect the pedagogical uniqueness of Ngā Toi. The site was launched by the Minister for Education in October 2002, supports the teaching of Nga Toi in the New Zealand Curriculum. It was the first of its kind to feature the Māori curriculum rather than being just a translation of the arts curriculum (Pūtaiao is the second). It features artist profiles, ideas for the classroom, unit plans, case studies, multimedia and professional development materials as well as links to other resources.
wickED InteractivesThe Māori interactives on the wickED site are intended to support student learning around the Pūtaiao curriculum. Interactives include 'How to make a Hāngi', ‘Matariki’, 'Naming parts of the Wharenui', and 'Te Wānanga o ngā manu' - an interactive on how to use the taiaha. Each interactive also has a set of teachers’ notes found within Pūtaiao Online, and are available in both English and te reo Māori.
Māori Myths and LegendsThis growing collection of stories based on Māori oral traditions and local iwi stories, includes supporting teacher material, links to relevant websites, and online activities for students.
Te WharekuraThis collection presents stories in te reo Māori from out-of-print, early editions of Te Wharekura, to more recent stories from the series.
Te RauparahaThis rich and detailed collection incorporates history, stories and lesson plans presented in te reo Māori, developed in partnership with Ngāti Toarangatira, the National Library of New Zealand and the Ministry of Education.
