The Learning Federation – Maths Learning Objects
Making maths easy the interactive way
Over the last five years, CWA New Media has won successive contracts to produce maths and numeracy learning objects for The Learning Federation – an initiative of the governments of Australia and New Zealand.
The need
The Learning Federation (TLF) project was established in response to the need for a contemporary, leading edge collection of high-quality, educationally sound and innovative learning objects that would engage the students of two nations.
To succeed in the highly competitive selection process, producers must demonstrate in-depth understanding of the curriculum and expertise in learning design that is in line with the latest research and thinking. Learning objects developed for this collection are required to challenge students to problem-solve and experiment, and to reflect on their learning.
The innovation
Working with leading maths educationalist, Dr Gill Thomas of Maths Technology, CWA New Media has created learning objects that provide students with strategies to address complex mathematical concepts. Tools are offered that students can use to visualise maths questions, and to support the development of their problem-solving skills. Step by step instruction together with positive feedback loops are incorporated to reinforce the students' learning.
CWA New Media's portfolio of work includes the learning objects Squirt, Scale Matters, The Divider, The Multiplier, The Part Adder and The Number Partner, which each encourage students to engage in interactive learning tasks which help them to explore the different mathematical concepts.
In developing learning objects for the TLF initiative, CWA New Media is aware that student engagement is fundamental to success. The company combines its experience working in classrooms in New Zealand, Australia and South East Asia, and its extensive curriculum knowledge, supported by a proven production methodology, to ensure that teachers and learners enjoy a rich learning experience.
